This is familiar to me. Before we went to Helsinki, we tried to memorize some Finnish words - but almost nothing came of it: these languages are not related to Indo-European languages in any way, and therefore it is almost impossible to find any associations for words.
By the way, in the north of Russia there are quite a lot of Finno-Ugric geographical names left over from the tribes that once lived there.
