I didn't know about this, and it's very interesting. We call this aircraft either simply IL-2, or "flying tank" (but rarely).
At the same time, the word "Stormovik" in Russian is also applicable, for example, to the more modern Sukhoi Su-25 or to American aircraft Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.
I wonder how this word got into the English-speaking environment - perhaps some interesting story is linked with this. For example, there is an interesting legend about how the Russian word "Bistro" got to France (it means "faster"): when in 1812 Russian troops entered Paris and saw that, despite the war, restaurants were operating in the city, they all wanted to drink something stronger as soon as possible. "Faster, faster!" - they told the waiters (in Russian). And then one of the restaurant owners guessed that if he writes this word on the signboard, then all Russians will dine in his restaurant.
